Arusha National Park

Overview:

Nestled at the foothills of Mount Meru, just a short drive from Arusha town, Arusha National Park is a compact but remarkably diverse sanctuary, a place where lush forests, shimmering lakes, and volcanic landscapes meet. Though small compared to other Tanzanian parks, it’s rich in both scenery and wildlife, offering an excellent start or finish to any northern safari adventure.

Covering about 137 square kilometers, the park is home to three distinct areas: the Ngurdoto Crater, a mini version of Ngorongoro filled with swamps and grasslands; the Momella Lakes, known for their changing hues and flocks of flamingos; and the forested slopes of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak at 4,566 meters. Together, these ecosystems create a haven for wildlife, from giraffes and buffalos to colobus monkeys swinging through the treetops.

While Arusha National Park doesn’t host large predators like lions, it’s perfect for those who enjoy peaceful, scenic safaris with opportunities to walk, canoe, and observe nature up close. It’s also the gateway to Mount Meru trekking, a rewarding climb with stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Highlights:

  • Scenic Variety: Explore volcanic craters, alpine forests, and sparkling lakes all in one park.

  • Walking Safaris: Take guided walks with park rangers — a rare opportunity to experience wildlife on foot.

  • Canoeing Adventures: Glide across the Momella Lakes surrounded by flamingos and views of Mount Meru.

  • Rich Wildlife: Spot giraffes, zebras, waterbucks, bushbucks, and primates such as blue and colobus monkeys.

  • Mount Meru Climb: A beautiful 3–4-day trek offering spectacular sunrise views of Kilimanjaro.

Best Time to Visit:

  • June to October (Dry Season): Excellent for walking safaris, canoeing, and clear mountain views.

  • November to May (Green Season): The park turns lush and vibrant; ideal for birdwatchers and photographers.

Travel Tip:

Because of its proximity to Arusha town (just 40 minutes away), the park is ideal for half-day or full-day excursions. It’s also an excellent warm-up for Kilimanjaro or a relaxing nature escape before heading deeper into the northern safari circuit.
