8-Day Kilimanjaro Climb – Lemosho Route
Trek Snapshot
The Most Beautiful and Well-Balanced Route
The Lemosho Route is widely considered one of the best ways to climb Kilimanjaro. It offers stunning scenery, fewer crowds at the beginning, a smooth acclimatization profile, and a high summit success rate. This 8-day version gives your body plenty of time to adjust, making the journey safer, calmer, and more enjoyable.
Your Day-to-Day
Day 1: Arusha/Moshi → Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820 m)
Drive to Londorossi Gate for registration, then continue to the trailhead. Begin your trek through quiet rainforest with chances to spot monkeys and forest birds. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp in the afternoon.
Hiking: 3–4 hours | Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m)
Climb out of the forest and into heather and moorland. Enjoy views of Shira Ridge as you trek onto the expansive Shira Plateau. Reach Shira 1 Camp for a calm evening.
Hiking: 5–6 hours | Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Day 3: Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp (3,840 m)
A short but important day for acclimatization. Walk across the wide-open plateau with stunning views of Kibo Peak. Arrive early at Shira 2 Camp for rest and optional acclimatization walks.
Hiking: 3–4 hours | Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
Day 4: Shira 2 → Lava Tower (4,630 m) → Barranco Camp (3,960 m)
Ascend gradually to Lava Tower for acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp. This climb-high, sleep-low approach boosts your altitude adaptation. Barranco Valley offers some of the most dramatic scenery on the route.
Hiking: 6–8 hours | Overnight: Barranco Camp
Day 5: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (3,995 m)
Start by climbing the famous Barranco Wall. Despite its appearance, the wall is safe and enjoyable. Continue through ridges to Karanga Camp, a crucial acclimatization stop before the summit push.
Hiking: 4–5 hours | Overnight: Karanga Camp
Day 6: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (4,673 m)
Climb to Barafu Camp in the high alpine desert. Arrive early, rest, hydrate, and prepare for the final ascent. The landscape becomes stark and dramatic as you approach the summit zone.
Hiking: 4–6 hours | Overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 7: Barafu → Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) → Mweka Camp
Begin the summit attempt around midnight. Slowly climb toward Stella Point before reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the top, descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.
Hiking: 10–14 hours | Overnight: Mweka Camp
Day 8: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Arusha/Moshi
Walk through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and return to Arusha or Moshi for a warm shower and a well-deserved rest.
