Tarangire National Park
Overview:
Named after the life-giving Tarangire River that winds through its heart, Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania’s most beautiful and underrated safari destinations. The park’s landscape is strikingly distinct, dotted with towering baobab trees, golden grasslands, and winding river valleys that come alive with wildlife, especially during the dry season.
Located just a few hours’ drive southwest of Arusha, Tarangire covers approximately 2,850 square kilometers, making it the sixth-largest national park in Tanzania. During the dry months (June to October), the Tarangire River becomes a vital water source, attracting vast herds of elephants, wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes, followed closely by predators like lions and leopards.
Tarangire is especially famous for its large elephant herds often numbering in the hundreds and its ancient baobabs, some estimated to be over a thousand years old. Beyond the big game, the park also shelters over 500 bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
While the Serengeti and Ngorongoro often steal the spotlight, Tarangire remains a peaceful retreat with fewer crowds, rewarding visitors with intimate and authentic safari experiences.
Highlights:
Elephant Paradise: Encounter some of Tanzania’s largest elephant populations.
